At the Johnson City Railroad Experience, we offer an engaging STEAM-focused field trip designed to meet Tennessee state standards for every grade level. Our interactive program includes four 20-minute stations featuring hands-on activities, take-home crafts, and deeper explorations for older students.
We provide pre- and post-visit activities to help teachers assess student learning and retention. Plus, we work directly with educators to customize the perfect experience for their class!

🚂 Symbols & Survival: The Secret Language of Hobos
Students will uncover the hidden world of hobo pictograms, a secret language used by travelers during the early 20th century. Through an interactive craft, students will create their own pictograms while learning about communication, survival, and social history.
📡 Train Tracking Lab: Real-Time Math & Motion
Using live data from passing trains, students will calculate speed, measure deviations, and estimate travel distances—applying math, physics, and observation skills to analyze real-world train movement.
⚙️ Staying on Track: The Science of Train Wheels
Why don’t train wheels slip off the rails? In this hands-on engineering challenge, students will design and test their own wheel systems, exploring the physics of stability, friction, and momentum to ensure a smooth ride on the tracks.
🌉 Bridge Builders: Engineering for Strength & Stability
Can your bridge support the weight of a train? Students will take on the role of civil engineers, constructing and testing their own bridges while learning about forces, materials, and the challenges of railroad infrastructure.
